Fifth International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant

May 23 - 27, 1999

This conference is held every two or three years and is without doubt the most important gathering of mercury scientists in the world. The 1999 conference was held from May 23rd to 27th in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. The meeting took place at the Sofitel Hotel, on the boundary of Copacabana Beach and Ipanema Beach. It would have been very difficult to find a more beautiful spot! Top Right: Hotel Sofitel, location of the conference. Below Right: View of Copacabana beach from the front of the hotel. (Not bad, eh?)

The congress took place under the patronage of CETEM/CNPq — Center for Mineral Technology, National Research Council of Brazil and UFF — Universidade Federal Fluminense. Tekran was proud to be one of the supporters of this event. Aside from the site-seeing, beach lounging, and fantastic food, the conference attendees were involved in one of the best scientific exchanges of mercury information ever! We would like to thank the organizers, especially Drude de Lacerda for their tireless work in organizing an excellent conference. (And for allowing us to display a few of our mercury instruments to the attendees.)

We would also like to thank our representative in Brazil, Ednaldo Silva de Melo of Engecim Eng. Ind. e Com. Ltda. for his help and continuous presence at the conference. For those who couldn't attend, or for the bosses of those who did attend, we have provided photographic evidence that the conference actually did take place.
(See below)

We have culled through the list of presentations and compiled a list of papers that, in some way, relate to Tekran. To those who couldn't be there, we've provided some consolation in the form of photos of what you missed.
